Cornwall’s Sharp’s Brewery has won a silver award in CAMRA’s Champion Beer of Britain competition for its special ale, Sea Fury.
Sharp's Sea Fury

This follows a four-medal haul at the International Beer Challenge, and recognition at the World Beer Awards in September, where the brewery had five additional wins.

CAMRA’s prestigious awards are given to recognise the very best in pubs, clubs, beer, and cider, says Sharp’s. The ultimate honour for UK brewers, the Champion Beer of Britain is one of the most prestigious beer competitions in the world.

Sharp’s Brewing Co’s Sea Fury is an exceptional example of the special bitter beer style, says the brewer, offering substance and depth of flavour without compromising balance and drinkability.

It was first brewed in 1996 to satisfy demand from local fishermen for a stronger ale to enjoy after long and perilous stints at sea. As a result, it takes its inspiration from the stormy Atlantic seas that crash into the rugged Cornish coast during the long, dark winter.

The CAMRA tasting panel described Sea Fury as, a “smooth, auburn premium bitter, with malt and caramel aromas. Dominant sweet malt with berry, stone and dried fruits, with spice hints”.

“We are absolutely thrilled to win silver for Sea Fury in these prestigious awards,” said Donna Beakspear, Sharp’s head of supply chain. “Olympic in style, with only a gold, silver, and bronze in each category, a silver is a fantastic result.

“Our 30th year has been a remarkable one for us with regards to award wins. We received four medals at this year’s International Beer Challenge and five at last month’s World Beer Awards.

“At Sharp’s, we pride ourselves on creating high-quality, innovative beers, and to see our efforts recognised on a national and international scale is a true testament to the hard work and passion of our brewing team.”

Bluntrock Brewery, of St Minver, has undertaken two ‘home and away’ collaborations with East London’s Pretty Decent Beer Co.

Take a Trip to London is a 6.5% ABV IPA created at Pretty Decent’s base, in Walthamstow. It’s a New Zealand hop showcase featuring Nectaron, Nelson Sauvin, and Motueka.

The ‘away’ beer is Take a Trip to Cornwall, created in Cornwall when Pretty Decent’s head brewer, Chris, paid a visit to Bluntrock. This is a 6.5% ABV NEIPA with Australian hops, namely Enigma, Ella, Galaxy, and Vic Secret.

In Cornwall, the beers have been pouring at Red Elephant Beer Cellar, The Front, The Sink Inn, and, of course, Bluntrock’s own taproom.

Verdant Stupid

Version four of Big Stupid Westy is packed with Chinook, Citra, Mosaic, and Simcoe hops.

“Expect pine sap, grapefruit, and big resinous aromas to envelop your senses with each gulp,” says Verdant. “An aggressive monster, pungent and bitter.”

Big Stupid Hazy is more laid back, with a tropical fruit punch, a massive mouthfeel, and a smooth, creamy body. It’s packed full of hop products, including new Hyperboost hop oil, as well as T90 cryo added during the dry hop.

Both beers have been ‘hot dipped’. This is where the brewer moves a portion of the hot wort to the fermenter and adds hops (in this case CO2-extracted hop liquid), recirculates, and then knocks out the remainder.

“Basically, moving hop additions downstream to pummel as much flavour into the beer as possible,” says the brewer.

Sharp’s Brewing Co joined with Carve Magazine, Newquay Boardriders, and Lusty Glaze last weekend to celebrate to celebrate a number of milestones.
Sharp's Lusty Glaze surf

This year marks Sharp’s and Carve’s 30th anniversaries, and it’s the 55th year of Newquay Boardriders and the 25th for the team at Lusty Glaze Beach. What better reason for the Cornish surf community to join together for a celebration?

While the sunbeams worked their Cornish magic, the surf wasn’t quite as epic as hoped. However, several local teams were undeterred, and they took to the waves for some fun challenges in the Carve X Sharp’s Offshore Pilsner Tag Team Surf Competition, organised by Newquay Boardriders.

From 6pm, the social kicked off with the surf prizegiving, followed by DJs Pete Isaac of Jelly Jazz and Bude’s B Side Social Club taking to the decks. Stone-baked pizzas and hot and cold drinks were served.

Sharp's Lusty Glaze DJs

Nick White, brand activation manager at Sharp’s Brewing Co, said: “We’ve loved working in partnership with Carve, and its sister magazine SurfGirl, over the decades, and we’ve got the same love for what we do in common, so it just made perfect sense to come together with the Cornish surf community on one of our favourite beaches, Lusty Glaze.

“We are stoked that the crew at Lusty Glaze Beach suggested hosting an event to celebrate our birthdays in style. It was a super-fun contest with Newquay Boardriders and an epic night with our friends from B Side Social Club and Pete from Jelly Jazz providing the beats.”

No alcohol drinking while surfing occurred during the event.

St Austell Brewery has announced a new multi-year deal with Championship rugby union side Cornish Pirates.
St Austell Cornish Pirates

Tribute, St Austell Brewery’s flagship ale, remains the exclusive beer of the Pirates. The rugby team will continue to wear its Tribute purple-themed away kit, first introduced in 2018, to commemorate their long-standing partnership, with Tribute as one of two main shirt sponsors. A case of Tribute will also be awarded to the man of the match at the end of each game.

“Tribute continues to support rugby at many levels across the South West, and our relationship with the Cornish Pirates shines as one of our longest and most successful partnerships,” said Laura McKay, St Austell’s director of marketing and communications.

“We are proud to work with a club that serves as a major source of pride for Cornwall, representing the county in the second tier of the English rugby union pyramid. We look forward to raising a beer and cheering the team on from the stands.”

Funds for RNLI

Ross Hancock, head of media, marketing, and commercial, at Cornish Pirates, added: “We’re very proud of our 16-year association with St Austell Brewery. The Tribute logo that sits proudly on our jersey is now synonymous with the Cornish Pirates, and we greatly value the relationship that we’ve built together over so many years.

“Their ongoing sponsorship is vital to the Cornish Pirates and goes a long way in supporting our players and events throughout the season.”

St Austell Brewery also supports the Cornish Pirates’ charity campaigns, with Tribute branding featuring on the reusable pint and two pint cups from its bars. All proceeds go to the clubs’ chosen xharity, with more than £10,000 raised for the RNLI through the charity cups campaign last year.

The Driftwood Spars, at Trevaunance Cove, Cornwall, is gearing up to host its annual autumn beer and music gathering, from 25th-27th October.
Driftwood Spars Festival Bar

Named Lou-Lapalooza this year, in honour of landlady Louise Treseder, entry to the mini-festival is free, for all to come and go as they please.

The main bar will be complemented by a guest beer bar featuring in-house brews and a curated selection from other local brewers, including Harbour, Atlantic, Pipeline, Bluntrock, Firebrand, and Mason.

“We’ll have a cask of Polberro, our green-hopped beer made with local wild hops, as well as a fresh batch of Irish Stout, which has been going down extremely well,” said head brewer Tim Lawrence.

“Also, Lou and I got together and brewed a 9% Belgian tripel specially for the occasion, which all festival-goers should definitely try!”

As well as beer, there will be a full programme of music over the weekend, as well as food from chef Tom Bennetts and his team.

The event is billed as (possibly!) Louise’s last beer festival at the pub, which is currently looking for a loving new owner. It’s the perfect opportunity to come and raise a glass with a legendary landlady who will be sorely missed when the time comes.

In its 30th anniversary year, Cornwall’s Sharp’s Brewing Co has racked up an impressive medal haul at this year’s International Beer Challenge.
Sharp's Chalky's Bite

This follows on from recognition at the World Beer Awards last month, where five awards were picked up. At the International Beer Challenge, Sharp’s took away a silver for Chalky’s Bite and Doom Bar, and bronze for Doom Bar Zero.

The competition is judged by a panel of industry experts, including brewers, sommeliers, and beer writers, who assess each entry on its quality, flavour, and character.

The silver medal for Chalky’s Bite, the vibrant Belgian-style beer named in honour of seafood chef Rick Stein’s dog, highlights the beer’s unique blend of coriander, citrus, and hop character. Incidentally, it is also Sharp’s most celebrated beer across the entire portfolio, having won more than 20 awards since launching in 2006.

Shrp's Doom Bar

Doom Bar, Sharp’s flagship amber ale, continues to impress, taking home a silver accolade for quality and consistency, while Doom Bar Zero, garnering widespread acclaim for its balanced and refreshing taste, was recognised with a bronze medal.

“We are absolutely thrilled to have received four medals at this year’s International Beer Challenge, not to mention five at last month’s World Beer Awards,” said Sharp’s technical brewer, Jonathan Wide.

“At Sharp’s, we pride ourselves on creating high-quality, innovative beers, and to see our efforts recognised on an international scale is a true testament to the hard work and passion of our brewing team.”

In its 30th anniversary year, Sharp’s Brewery has introduced two innovative tasting experiences at the visitor centre on site at its base.
Sharp's Good Grain flights

For a new beer flight experience, the team has partnered with local Newquay-based woodwork company Good Grain Ltd, who also make the iconic Dick Pearce bellyboards.

Led by owner Jamie Johnstone, the Good Grain team have crafted a set of original, sustainably-sourced wooden beer ‘paddles’ onto which the Sharp’s team will place three glasses (equating to half-pint measures) of beer of cider for a new flight tasting experience.

Also new to the brewery site is the Secret Bar. This is a tiny, purpose-built ‘speakeasy’ that has appeared over the years at UK-wide events and converted legions of previously non-beer drinkers into fans via the unique Sharp’s beer and food pairing experience.

Sharp's Secret Bar
Sharp’s Secret Bar

Exact details of the Secret Bar experience are kept under wraps, but visitors can expect to enjoy bite-sized taster dishes with impeccably matched beers, and a video insight into what happens behind the scenes at Sharp’s. All this while learning the history of beer, the best way to taste beer, and much more.

“We love hosting beer and cider drinkers here at the brewery, and people come from far and wide to see where their favourite brews are created,” said Sam Lyne, Sharp’s hospitality and retail manager.

“This is such an honour and we want to give these dedicated visitors an ultimate experience and vital insight into our products and what we do here day to day. This is why, in our 30th year, we have elevated the visitor experience on-site here in Rock by adding in these two new elements.

“So, if you are looking for something a little different to do in Cornwall, come and visit us and enjoy every drop.” Find out more on the Sharp’s website.

Treen’s Brewery, in Ponsanooth, has been presented with national and regional awards from the Campaign for Real Ale. This took place at The Stag Hunt, in the village, on Saturday.

The pub is the official taproom for Treen’s beers, with four or five of the brews available all the time. On Fridays, customers can call in to pick up pre-ordered take-outs.

“We trialled it and it seemed to go down well,” said Sarah Treen, who runs the brewery with husband and brewer Simon. “We’ve also got our local shop doing pizza deliveries to the pub so it’s a good Ponsanooth enterprise going!”

The pub is a former tied house, but is freehold these days, with Treen’s brews proving enormously popular, especially session brews Sunbeam and Classic.

Treen's presentation awards

“We’re really pleased to be working alongside the Stag in this venture,” said Sarah. “While there has been a big increase in brewery taprooms in the last few years, we’ve always felt that the traditional pub is at the heart of our business ethos, so hopefully we can now combine the best of both worlds – a great pub with a fantastic range of beer – with less than half a food mile racked up!”

The national CAMRA award is for Smoulder, a ruby, slightly fruity ale, with a note of wood smoke on the aroma, which really comes into its own in autumn.

In South West judging for Champion Beer of Britain, there was silver for Cloud Cuckoo, a warming, full-bodied, malty winter ale, and bronze for Resolve, a strong dark brew with chocolate and coffee notes.

Cloud Cuckoo has been a consistent award winner for Treen’s, and has helped the brewery win at least one award a year since it was established eight years ago. The Stag Hunt was busy on Saturday with CAMRA members and locals, all keen to congratulate Simon and Sarah on their awards haul. The presentations were made by Vince Curtis, CAMRA’s brewery liaison officer for Treen’s Brewery.
